The indoor volleyball event in the SEA Games typically features six to eight teams, depending on the number of participating countries. The teams compete in a round-robin format, followed by knockout rounds for the top four teams. The beach volleyball event, on the other hand, typically features eight to ten teams, and the teams compete in a double-elimination tournament format.

The Philippines has traditionally been a strong contender in volleyball in the SEA Games, having won multiple medals in both indoor and beach volleyball events. Other countries that have had success in volleyball in the SEA Games include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
